The Grammy Award-winning French rock band Phoenix released a new project, but this time it isn’t a new record, it is a new sake! The band collaborated with renowned Japanese sake brewery Tatenokawa to launch a limited edition sake in honor of Japanese restauranteur, specialty grocery store owner, sake expert and a good friend of the Phoenix members Toshiro Kuroda, whopassed away from cancer in February of 2017 in Paris. This special sake, Tatenokawa PHOENIX, which will be available in NYC in July, is a Junmai Daiginjo made from Yamagata’s Dewa Sansan local sake rice polished to 50%. It has light and complex flavors with a fruity aroma, which makes it a great summer sake to be enjoyed chilled.
Phoenix’s guitarist Christian Mazzalai is known to be the band’s sake lover. He was introduced to sake by Kuroda san in Paris; he was a frequent customer of his shop, and was educated on how to enjoy sake, which he shared with his fellow band members, Thomas Mars, Deck d’Arcy and Laurent Brancowitz.
Tatenokawa and the band decided to collaborate out of respect and gratitude to Mr. Kuroda who spent many years working hard to promote sake in Europe. Christian says on his social media; “Mr. Kuroda was a great master who taught all the beauties of life which include sake, and is still inspiring us every day.”A portion of sales from the sake will be donated to the Japanese Red Cross Society to support the progression of medical technology.
This premium sake will be available at selected liquor stores and restaurants in New York City this summer.
